A Crime Prevention
Education Program
designed for people with
Developmental Disabilities

  
 
 
 
 

 
What is Safe and Strong?


A video Program produced by Irene Lucas that will teach and use scenarios to deliver important crime prevention tips as well as resources and information to students.

The program was developed to help agencies keep adults and teens with developmental disabilities safe within the community.

The Kitsap County pilot program will start in two school Districts; Bremerton and South Kitsap.

 There are four modules to the series.


I. SAFETY IN THE COMMUNITY

This module teaches students how to keep safe and strong in the community by demonstrating key safety information in an easy to understand way. Topics covered:

  • Types of emergency and contact information and ID's, resources such as 911
  • Keeping personal information and money safe.
  • Staying safe on the bus
  • Keeping out of fights and problem solving techniques when angry.


    II. Sexual Assault Victim/Witness :
    What to do/What to Expect

    This module will take students through the process of reporting an assault from the initial shock of the act, turmoil of reporting it, the law enforcement and medical forensic interview, to meeting with a victim/witness advocate and going to trial.

    The training is designed to help individuals who have been sexual assaulted to "break out of the cycle of sexual assault ".


    III. Home Alone- Helping Those with a Developmental Disability

    This module teaches students to learn the importance of basic steps of home safety while alone:
  • Basic steps of leaving a light on
  • Locking the doors and windows.
  • When on the phone never admitting you are alone.
  • If someone is at the door, do NOT open it, tell them “NO thanks –go away”, to prevent entrance of assault.
  • Know when to call 911
  • If you come home and someone is in our home, what steps to take.
  • Recognizing and reporting strangers or a known assault to the proper authority.


    IV. Appropriate Interactions/Law Enforcement

    In this module a person with a disability finds a wallet, and is falsely arrested for being involved in a mugging. Goals are to teach people how to react in traumatic situation involving the police.

  • Not to run
  • The importance of showing your identification
  • If arrested what can you expect to happen?
  • Do you know your rights and who you should call?

  • Asking for an attorney.
