Parent Advocacy Training Program

Program 1: Basic Advocacy Skills

Co-sponsored by Washington PAVE and The Arc of King County

Please join us for the first in a series of training programs for parents of children with disabilities to be presented by the Seattle University School of Law, Washington PAVE and The Arc of King County in conjunction with other Puget Sound area disability and advocacy organizations.

This program will focus on the basic advocacy skills for parents, with a focus on Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (elementary and secondary education).

Future programs will examine other issues relevant to families with disabilities. Inasmuch as this program is intended for non-attorneys, no CLE credits will be sought for this program.

Program Agenda includes: 

  • Basic Explanations and Comparisons of IDEA, S504, and other relevant statutes.

  • Effective Advocacy Skills, including how to find an use an advocate
  • Complaints (OSPI); alternative Dispute Resolution Options; Mediation; Due  Process
  • How to Communicate with School Administration and Personnel IEPs (including transition)
  • Panel with Open Q&A
